One reason why Linux fits in the real world better
For the last month, every time insert one of the four pieces of 512mb ram, Windows (Vista and XP) get a blue screen of death on start up. But, just out of interest, I decided to see if the problem also persists with OpenSuse Linux. So I booted up the system and selected OpenSuse. OpenSuse started up (and worked) like a charm, like there was nothing wrong.
Follow up:
One of the big problems with desktop Linux is the lack of driver support for various hardware. This is the place where Windows is at its strongest point. But when it comes down to the standard, base hardware, this were Windows doesn't do so well.
If my RAM is truly damaged, then this reflects the power of the Linux kernel. Windows seems to show the blue screen of death and/or restarts when it is unable to load data into a certain position in the RAM. Linux, on the other hand, simply skips over it, ignoring the problem.
Now, imagine this problem on a Windows based system which is assigned to an important task. Lets for instance take something simple, a supermarket crash register (A system simple enough to build on any platform). You have three cash registers working in a medium sized supermarket. There is a constant flow of customers, usually taking up all three registers. One of the registers has a RAM problem one morning and the register needs to be sent to repair. This leaves 2 cash registers working, making up the flow of customers for the malfunctioning register. The two lines get bigger and bigger as the two remaining registers struggle to keep up with the constant flow. Customer satisfaction goes down, the business suffers. The broken register may only arrive a few days later, or the crew that comes to repair might not have extra ram with them. The business continues to suffer for the next few days.
Now, imagine this situation, only running on Linux. The register has a problem with the RAM, but the Linux kernel simply ignores the problem. The register stays working, the lines don't get long, and customer satisfaction stays up.
