Dangers of computer controled houses
Its very uncommon today and found in only some of the homes of the rich. But in the not so distant future, it will be available for the middle class. But any network based technology that comes onto the public market, is commonly subject to hack and exploit from the outside.
Picture this, your house has a computer embedded into every single room. The panels are able to control your lights, stove, washing machine, ventilation, television and computers. It will be connected to the internet for you to be able to quickly view email, make video calls, and quickly select your Itunes music from the store. This, all controllable from any panel connected to a main hub which controls your house.
Follow up:
Now, imagine this. A hacker gains control of your home system. Since the system is connected to the internet, a hacker crawls through the numerous security holes and has complete control of the system. He will be able to not only create a disco from your lights, but even start a fire using your stove. A new kind of crime will be born, burning houses from the inside.
What about a virus? Since your probably going to be checking email, viruses may have the ability to crawl through into the system, causing even more devastating damage.
So, after I told you this scary future prediction, is it really that bad? Yes. This technology will take most of us out of our computer chairs and change the way we use computers. But the Internet is part of 70% of all computer use. The Internet for this system, will be a necessity. There is no escaping it.
But, here is a good part. These systems, despite their holes, will have very high security. Basically, your teenage son probably wont be able to control your neighbors lights (Who know though, damn teenagers
). Hacking into one of these systems will probably be as hard as hacking into Google, so you need someone good and who knows the system inside out.
